Sweet Almond Pastry Delight (Print Version)

01 - 1 large egg
02 - 1 tablespoon water
03 - 8 oz almond paste
04 - ¼ cup granulated sugar
05 - 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
06 - 1 sheet puff pastry
07 - ¼ cup sliced almonds

# Instructions:

01 - Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
02 - In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and water. Set aside.
03 - In a food processor or stand mixer, combine almond paste, sugar, and vanilla extract until well mixed.
04 - Unfold the puff pastry sheet on the prepared baking sheet. Use a rolling pin to gently roll it slightly thinner and larger than its original size.
05 - Cut slits 1 inch apart along the edges of the puff pastry, leaving the center intact. Place the almond paste mixture down the center. Fold the strips over the filling on a diagonal, alternating sides.
06 - Brush the pastry lightly with the prepared egg wash. Sprinkle the sliced almonds over the top.
07 - Bake for 10 minutes at 400°F, then reduce the heat to 375°F and bake for an additional 17–20 minutes, or until golden brown.
08 - Let the pastry cool on the baking sheet for 10 minutes. Slice and serve.

# Notes:

01 - Thaw puff pastry in the refrigerator overnight, or set it out at room temperature just until it’s pliable. Over-warmed pastry may become soggy.
02 - Do not skimp on the almond paste—it provides the primary flavor.
03 - To add chocolate, spread Nutella over the almond mixture before braiding the pastry.
