In a small bowl, combine the warm water (110°F/45°C), active dry yeast, and granulated sugar. Stir gently and let the mixture sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy and bubbles form on the surface. This indicates that your yeast is active and ready to use.
02 -
In a large mixing bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the flour, softened butter, and salt. Pour in the activated yeast mixture. If using a stand mixer, attach the dough hook and mix on medium speed. If mixing by hand, stir until the ingredients come together, then transfer to a floured surface and knead. Continue kneading until the dough becomes smooth and elastic, about 8-10 minutes.
03 -
Lightly grease a large bowl with oil or cooking spray. Place the kneaded dough into the bowl and turn it once to coat the surface with oil. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and place it in a warm, draft-free area. Let the dough rise for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
04 -
Once the dough has risen, gently punch it down to release air bubbles. Transfer to a lightly floured surface and divide it into 12-14 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a 6-7 inch long rope shape. Place the shaped breadsticks on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving about 2 inches of space between each one.
05 -
Cover the shaped breadsticks with a kitchen towel and let them rise for another 20-30 minutes until they look puffy. This second rise helps develop the light, airy texture that makes these breadsticks so delicious.
06 -
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Once the breadsticks have completed their second rise, bake them in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until they're golden brown on top.
07 -
While the breadsticks are baking, prepare the garlic butter topping. In a small bowl, combine the melted butter, garlic powder, and salt, stirring until well mixed. As soon as the breadsticks come out of the oven, use a pastry brush to generously coat each breadstick with the garlic butter mixture.
08 -
Serve the breadsticks warm for the best flavor and texture. They're perfect alongside pasta dishes, soups, or salads, or simply enjoyed on their own.
