Hot Buttered Apple Sauce (Print Version)

# Ingredients:

→ Main Ingredients

01 - 12 fresh Fuji apples
02 - 2 cups water

→ For Topping

03 - 1 to 2 tablespoons pastured butter
04 - 1 pinch ground cinnamon
05 - 1 pinch ground nutmeg

# Instructions:

01 - Peel and cut the apples into chunks.
02 - Put them in a large pot with a tight-fitting lid and add the water.
03 - Bring them to a slow simmer over medium heat. Turn the heat down to low and cover the pot.
04 - Cook the apples covered, low and slow, for about 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
05 - Once the majority of the water has evaporated the apples should be darkening into a caramel-like color. Stir more often now and keep cooking until the sauce is thick and completely tender. Break up any large chunks with the back of your spoon.
06 - Serve the sauce hot in small bowls topped with a large dollop of butter and ground spices.

# Notes:

01 - Leftover apple sauce can be refrigerated for later eating either cold or reheated!
02 - For a smoother sauce, you can use an immersion blender after cooking.
03 - Other apple varieties like Gala, Honeycrisp, or Pink Lady also work well in this recipe.
